The traditional approach to a miru shibori motif sees concentric lines evenly placed with rows leaving and returning to the central fold. Following these basic principles, rows start at selected distances from the fold to form a negative shape before they flare out at the top. In the secomd image you can see how this negative space comes into its own. The stem can be any length. Marilyn Hall, a former student who has assisted brilliantly on many of my Norfolk Summer Schools has done a really fantastic job of stitching ‘Trumpet’ on a cotton lawn.
